# Data access and license

> Where to find the China Index 2024 data, how the files are organised, and the license it is released under.

## Where to find the data

Every change to the repository is recorded in its Git history. To make your work reproducible, note the date you downloaded the data or the commit you used.

## Files in the 2024 folder

| File | Contents |

| `china_index_2024.csv` | One row per Indicator, one column per country (wide format). |
| `china_index_2024_indicator_by_country.csv` | One row per Indicator and country, with region and Layer (long format). |
| `indicator_2023.json` | Indicator text, Domain, Layer and grading type for all 99 Indicators. |
| `iso.json` | ISO 3166 country codes and names (for mapping). |
| `country_json/` | One file per country, as used for the Country Profiles. |
| `website_json_file/` | Scores, rankings and lists used by china-index.io. |

### Reading the values

| Value | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `0`–`4` | Indicator score. Simple Yes-No Indicators use only 0 and 4; Diplomatic position Indicators use 0, 2 and 4. See [Scoring and ranking](/2024/scoring). |
| `na` | The Indicator was skipped for that country. It is left out of that country's maximum score. |

Indicator numbers run from 1 to 99 in Domain order. To compare an Indicator with the 2022 edition, check [Indicator changes](/2024/indicator-changes) first: only Indicators with an unchanged scope can be read side by side.

The China Index 2024 data is released under the [Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) (CC BY-SA 4.0). You may share and adapt it, including commercially, if you credit Doublethink Lab and the China Index 2024, with a link to [china-index.io](https://china-index.io/), and release what you build from it under the same license.
